Description

The 2015 Chevy Silverado based VIA VTRUX is an electric truck that can drive up to 40 miles in full-electric mode until its range-extender, in the form of a 4.3 liter V6 EcoTec3 engine, kicks in. This range extender does not drive the wheels, instead it keeps the battery pack charged while the electric motor continues to drive the wheels, much like the Chevy Volt. Some have actually commented it drives much like a large Chevy Volt.2015 VIA VTRUX InfographicSo how does this electric truck perform? It produces 402 horsepower and produces 415 Nm of torque, which translates to about 306 ft-lb of torque. Capabilities-wise the VTRUX is about on par with the 4.3 liter V6 Silverado with a 1,000 pound payload capacity and 4,500 pound towing capacity. These numbers haven't been tested by the EPA yet, however. It still needs to be rated in their grueling Davis Dam testing. Additionally, the truck can also be used as a mobile power station with it's power "xport" outlets.VIA VTRUX Power XportFor now the VTRUX is available strictly to fleet customers at roughly $65,000 for a reasonably equipped crew cab, this is down from a roughly $80k price tag some years ago. VIA promises, though, that the truck will soon be available to the general public. This truck does qualify for a $7,500 federal tax incentive.Interested in this truck? VIA says the break-even point is at about 12,000 miles per year for this truck, otherwise the main reason to talk yourself into this one would be a greener lifestyle. At that 12,000 miles you'd be driving about an average of 33 miles per day, or maybe around 40 if you drive it on work-days only, meaning you'd hardly ever be kicking in that gas engine/range extender. At 60 miles driven in a day VIA quotes a figure of 120 Mpg equivalent.
